 Trauma Management

Brain trauma is treated aggressively at our Intensive Care Unit with the use of intracranial pressure monitoring, sedation, ventilation, air beds, and Swan Ganz and arterial pressure catheters for hemodynamic  management.

Our critical care nursing staff monitors patients minute-by-minute to immediately detect and minimize further brain injury, giving the brain-injured patient maximum opportunity for recovery.  Each patient's care is managed by a case manager and a physician team consisting of a trauma surgeon, a neurosurgeon and an intensivist.

 Stroke Care

EIRMC provides an aggressive approach to stroke care.  The team consists of neurologists, other physicians, nurses, physical and occupational therapists, speech therapists, dietitians, and respiratory therapists.  Both patient and family participate in therapy planning.  Each program is designed to ensure that all necessary support services are provided to maximize rehabilitation and recovery to return the stroke patient to an optimal level of independence.

Sleep Lab

EIRMC has one of the most complete diagnostic sleep labs in the area.  Through research, studies, and testing, our sleep lab can help diagnose whether a patient has a sleep disorder.  If a patient does have a sleep disorder, the lab can advise him/her how to get better sleep.

EIRMC's lab can conduct overnight sleep studies, daytime nap testing, and other studies.  During sleep studies, technicians monitor the sleeper's brain waves, heart rate, eye movement, leg movement, breathing, oxygen saturation, air flow, body position, and snoring.  These activities are monitored electronically and recorded on a computer.

After the study, a sleep specialist reviews and interprets the record.  Sleep testing assists physicians in diagnosing, for example, sleep apnea, hypersomnia, oxygenation problems, and heart problems.

EIRMC Rehabilitation

EIRMC Rehabilitation Services provide comprehensive care for patients with stroke, low spinal cord injury, traumatic brain injury and other neurological illnesses.  Our goal is to help patients quickly regain as much independence as possible. We provide neurologically focused inpatient and outpatient therapy. As part of a major medical center, we are able to care for patients immediately following their illness or injury, and through every step of their recovery.

Services provided on our inpatient unit are coordinated by a board certified Medical Director.  The medical director directs an interdisciplinary team in the delivery of integrated medical and rehabilitation programming 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.   The interdisciplinary team includes the individual being served, family/significant others, occupational therapy, physical therapy, psychology, speech pathology, rehabilitative nursing  and social services.

The rehabilitation team provides evaluation and treatment of permanent and/or temporary impairments and limitations in acitivity and/or participation.  The goal of our program is for individuals served to achieve an optimal level of  functional independence.  We begin planning for a return home, or to the most independent setting possible, from the start of our program.  Our program also offers counseling, links to support groups, family training, home evaluations return to driving, and transfers within the contiuum of care.
